You always think of what you “should” do, but what shouldn’t you do to store wine well? Here are 5 Don’ts!!

  1. Don’t Put Wine On Top of Your Fridge – heat and large temperature changes damage wine. Heat in particular can literally “cook off wine” and make it go bad. The top of your fridge is hot. Fine for cereal boxes, not ok for even your Two Buck Chuck (which is totally ok to drink!).¨
  1. Don’t Store Wine in the Fridge – if stored for a long time in the fridge, corked wines can suffer. The air dries out the cork, letting oxygen into the bottle. This makes wine taste stale, flat, flabby, yuck. If it’s champagne, even worse…pop go the bubbles and they fizz out.
  1. Don’t Store the Wine Standing Up if It’s Corked – if the wine is corked, then store the bottle on its side so that the wine is in constant contact PlaygroundPark_640x430.jpgwith the cork, preventing it from drying out. More and more wines nowadays are screw tops. Until the seal is broken, no oxygen can get into the wine and there is no cork that can dry out. For these, you can store them on their side or stand them up. Whatever is best for you.
  1. Don’t Store Your Wine Next to a Window– strong natural or artificial light can cause bad flavors to develop.
  1. Don’t Keep Your Wine On Top of a Vibrating Surface – wine should be stored undisturbed in a cool constant temperature ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Again, no refrigerators or perhaps washing machines?

So much to remember! Swirl, sip, sigh.
